Cellists David Requiro, Meta Weiss, Alice Yoo, and Matthew Zalkind make up the newly formed Colorado Cello Quartet. The four cellists are based in Denver and Boulder and are seasoned soloists, chamber musicians, and educators. The CCQ performs composers spanning hundreds of years of writing/arranging for the unique and versatile cello ensemble. CCQ is passionate about championing new works and expanding the cello quartet literature.

David Requiro

First Prize winner of the 2008 Naumburg International Violoncello Competition, DAVID REQUIRO(pronounced re-KEER-oh) has emerged as one of today’s finest American cellists. Having won First Prize in both the Washington International and Irving M. Klein International String Competitions, he also captured a top prize at the Gaspar Cassadó International Violoncello Competition in Hachioji, Japan, coupled with the prize for the best performances of works by Cassadó. Mr. Requiro currently performs with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center as a Bowers Program Artist, and serves as Assistant Professor of Cello at the University of Colorado Boulder.

 

Meta Weiss

Meta Weiss (pronounced MAY-ta) made her international debut at the age of seven in Holland, and has established herself as one of the leading cellists of her generation. Her performances have taken her to venues worldwide, including Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, Boston Symphony Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Sydney Opera House, and Melbourne Recital Centre. Top prize-winner in numerous competitions, she has been hailed as “magnetic” (ArtsJournal) and “luminous” (Sydney Arts Guide). A graduate of Rice University (BM) and The Juilliard School (MM, DMA), she is Chamber Music Coordinator and Senior Instructor for the College of Music at the University of Colorado Boulder and Artistic Director of the Boulder Cello Festival.

 

Alice Yoo

Cellist Alice Yoo is a celebrated soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician and has been warmly hailed for her sensitive musicianship, expressive nuance, and passionate commitment to teaching. She serves on the faculty at the University of Denver and is the co-artistic director of the Denver Chamber Music Festival with her partner Matthew Zalkind.

 

Matthew Zalkind

Praised for his “impressive refinement, eloquent phrasing, and singing tone” by The New York Times, cellist Matthew Zalkind performs internationally as a recitalist, soloist and chamber musician.   A former member of the Harlem String Quartet, Mr. Zalkind toured to Japan, England, Ethiopia, and every region of the United States with the ensemble. He garnered top prizes in many international solo competitions including the Washington International Competition, Isang Yun International Competition, and the Beijing International Competition. With his partner Alice Yoo, Zalkind is the co-artistic director of the brand-new Denver Chamber Music Festival, a destination for world class chamber music in Colorado.  Zalkind serves as Assistant Professor of Cello at the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music.
